We are starting a little nursery for these lovely large tropical plants called tabacones (TA-ba-KO-nees). I heard they are related to the tobacco plant. I heard that this is what Cuban’s make their cigars with. (However I also heard you can cure a hernia by pressing the sole of the foot up against a certain tree and marking the bark, so…) Estamos comenzando un vivero poco para estas hermosas plantas tropicales grandes llamados tabacones. He oído que están relacionadas con la planta del tabaco. He oído que esto es lo que Cuba a hacersus cigarros con. I’m very excited. These plants grow wild in the rain forest. But if you’re lucky and you have excellent friends who are into all things green, you might be gifted a penis-shaped tuber encrusted with pomegranate-like seeds to get you started.
Estoy muy emocionado. Estas plantas crecen en forma silvestre en la selva tropical. Pero si tienes suerte y usted tiene amigos que son excelentes en todas las cosas verdes, puede ser dotado de un tubérculo en forma de pene con incrustaciones de semillas como esas de granada, como para empezar.
It was a fun day, everyone pitched in. There was Lupe (shovel), Harry (wheelbarrow), Margarita (hose) Anna and Shari (watching) and me (bags).

Earth was wheelbarrowed over to the shady planting area we selected under the mango trees. Sawdust was shovelled into the earth (please see my previous post about the hard dry earth here). We added compost, watered it all (a lot, with a hose, for many minutes), and then filled 60 little bags with it.

Margarita was running this operation and she placed 2 seeds in each bag, and a bunch in some pots, and that was the task DONE.

Someday they’ll look like this. Algún día van a tener este aspecto. And at some point, we look forward to selling our dear mother plants (for a fair price, of course) to hotels and restaurants all throughout the land. Y en algún momento, esperamos vender nuestra querida plantas (para un precio justo, por supuesto)a los hoteles y restaurantes en todo el país.
